What is Nature Based Counseling?

Also called Ecotherapy, is often seen as part of the growing field of Eco-Psychology. What does that mean?

Well, it can take on many different forms and meanings, but for me it means that I believe in the restorative powers that nature can provide. Nature Therapy is truly one of the oldest therapeutic approaches. Many religions and beliefs have shown the importance of connection to nature- Christianity, Indigenous Wisdom and teaching, Buddhism, all have stories of healing found in nature. Throughout history many cultures and civilizations have sought out and celebrated nature. American literature of the 18 and 1900's celebrated nature, and early photographers like Ansel Adams celebrated the beauty of serenity of nature.

Nature as a therapeutic tool has been researched by many-- more than I could list, but some of my favorite studies have looked at the husband and wife team- Kaplan and Kaplan, who coined Attention Restoration Theory (ART). Their studies, and the studies of others following their theory, have shown that people's recall is higher when exposed to nature, and that stress levels go down. This study has been repeated everywhere, from schools to prisons. Even more amazing is that studies have shown that for ART to be effective sometimes even just looking out a window, or at a photograph can make a difference.

Many studies have shown that time in nature can help reduce ADD and ADHD symptoms. It can help develop social skills. And some studies have gone so far as to say access to green space can help predict school achievement and success. (But there is a lot to unpack behind that idea).

What's the best thing about it? Everyone can do it! People of all abilities and backgrounds can find health and restoration in nature. Are you ready to try?
